Italy: Three Algerian Muslims Arrested On Terror Charges

According to icWales, three Algerians have been arrested on suspicion of plotting a terrorist attack.

The news, carried by three Italian news agencies, is that the men were allied to a group which has forged links with Osama bin Laden, and were planing an attack in Rome, Naples or Brescia. One of those detained recently bought explosives, stated Il Messaggero.

The carabinieri paramilitary police, acting on information from SISMI, the Italian intelligence agency, apprehended the men in Naples and Brescia on Tuesday night and Wednesday. They have been charged with "suspicion of association with the aim of international terrorism", a charge introduced after the 9/11 attacks in the US.

The agency ANSA named the men as Yamine Bouhrama, Khaled Serai and Mohamed Larbi. They are said to be linked to the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), which is based in Algeria, and has already declared its intention to ignore an amnesty offered via a national referendum.

In September, premises were raided in Milan in a hunt for financiers for the group, while at the same time, arrests were made in France of nine suspects connected to the group, who in France are linked to and appear to be led by convicted terrorist Safe Bourada.

Bouhrama and Serai had lived in Norway, according to one account, and one of the men had received training at camps in Chechnya and Afghanistan. On certain internet sites, Italy has been listed as a jihadist target because it has troops in Iraq. These threats are being taken seriously by the Italian authorities.
