Massachusetts: Saudi Royal Convicted, but Chooses his Jail

Ah, to be a Saudi Prince. To drink (against the tenets of Islam), to commit manslaughter (not against the tenets of Islam if the victim is an infidel), to pick your jail. A travesty of Justice has taken place in the Commonwealth of Massachussetts: Saudi royal picks his jail: Convict will do a year on MV

A 23-year-old kinsman of the Saudi royal family will spend only a year in jail on scenic Martha's Vineyard for running down a Cambridge father - allegedly while drunk - under a plea agreement to be presented this morning to a Suffolk Superior Court judge.

Bader Al-Saud, a former philosophy student at Suffolk University, was hurtling down Charles Street at nearly 50 mph in a luxury SUV on Oct. 29, 2002. He plowed into Orlando Ramos of Cambridge, killing the 37-year-old itinerant landscaper. His body landed 150 feet away, authorities said.

"He killed someone and he gets to pick where he wants to go to jail?" said an outraged Paula Caruso, mother of Ramos' daughter, Jennifer, 16. "Why? Because he has money he gets to choose?"

A lawyer for Jennifer Ramos said her family was infuriated to learn that Al-Saud has been allowed to choose an island getaway - the Dukes County Jail and House of Corrections in Edgartown - as his prison.

A final note: this guy was studying Philosophy? Was he trying to become an Islamic apologist?

In the above commments regarding Bader Al-Saud's
one year prison sentence at Martha's Vineyard,
the author leaves out several significant facts
and shows her bias.

First and most importantly, the victim, Orlando
Ramos, was suicidal. Mr Ramos had previously
attempted to kill himself in a simliar manner.
He was under the care of a psychiatrist for
depression at the time of this incident.

Secondly, Ramos' blood alocohol level at the time
of his death was .176, and furthermore, traces of
cocaine were found in his blood.

Third, the one year sentence for this crime
was in accord with other similiar incidents in
Suffolk county.

Fourth, the reason for the plea bargain and not
going to trial, was the very high risk of the
defendant, Al-Saud, being found not guilty.

Really, the only big anomaly here is the selection
of the detention center - Martha's Vineyard. For
certain, Al-Saud's royalty lineage influenced
this.

To be sure this is another trajedy in the
seemingly endless stream of trajedies from
drinking and driving. It probably could have been
prevented as well if Al-Saud was a "real" Muslim
and abstained from drinking. But let's
not let our emotional sentiments cloud the fact
that the victim in this case may not have been a
real victim.

P.S. If the victim here wasn't suicidal, I would be just as incensed as the author.
