Glimmers of Hope in a Bleak Situation

I don't know about you, but the riots in France and several other countries over the last three weeks have brutalized my sense of confidence that the West will pull through. The media claims France is back to pre-riot norms with only 100 cars per day burned. Imagine for the past several years 100 cars per night being torched and French society being comfortable with that. The Tension has a few interesting photos of the riot and the Brussels Journal is a good source for news and commentary and the ongoing media blackout about the situtation.

I don't know if the rapidly declining civil society in France can be reversed, but I do know that Chirac is not the man to take on the task. The man didn't even appear on television to address the riots until a week into the riots and his appearances are mainly to tell the greater French citizens they must examine themselves for how they may have caused the current "malaise". God help the French.

There is a glimmer of hope with Sarkozy who, despite media attempts to make him look bad, seems to be increasing in popularity. If Sarkozy plays his cards right, he could become President after the 2007 elections.

Were it not for the riots, France's weak response and the media's non-response, I would be happier with the news that the United Nations will keep its slimy hands off of control of the internet, for the time being.
