Syria: Australian Muslim Women Try To Smuggle Gun Onto Plane

According to News.com.au, four Australian women and a boy, of Iraqi descent, are being detained in Syria, after an attempt was made to smuggle a gun onto a plane bound for Australia.

One of the women is a resident of Victoria and two are from New South Wales. With them are two Iraqi women nationals. Inside their hand luggage was a dismantled gun, hidden inside a toy held by the boy. According to David Baker, a spokesman for Gulf Air, the carrier whose flight they attempted to board, bullets had also been found in the hold of the plane.

Three hours after the women and child were removed for quesioning, the plane was cleared for take-off. The women were carrying Australian passports, and the Canadian consular officials are acting as intermediaries between the Syrians and the Australian government, which does not have an embassy in Syria.
