Thailand: Nine Muslims From One Family Shot Dead

In the southern province of Narathiwat, militants raided a village at night, killing nine members of one family, including an 8-month old baby, states Reuters AlertNet today. A mother and father and their seven daughters were shot dead in Gra Thong village. Nine others, from two different families, were injured in the raid.

The villagers blamed security forces for the killings and at first would not let police and army officials to conduct an examination at the village, an army spokesmen said. He stated that the army were not responsible. "This is the work of troublemakers who created the incident and blamed it on security officials," he claimed.

After a stand-off of four hours while negotiations took place with the villagers, armed troops entered to make an inspection. M-79 and AK-47 bullet casings lay around a group of three one-storey houses, whose roofs had been blown away.

"This is another Tanyong Limoh" said Governor Pracha Taerat, referring to an incident in September which we documented earlier, in which two marines suspected of being involved with the killing of a local man had been abducted in Tamyong Limoh and held hostage. The men were later beaten to death. The men were blamed for a militant raid upon a teashop, in which gunmen fired on its occupants, killing one person and wounding four.
