India: Islamist Suicide Bombers Kill Four in Kashmir
The Scotsman reports that an explosives-laden car driven by militants was rammed into the vehicle in which a former Indian state minister was travelling in Indian Kashmir.
The blast killed at least two people and injured at least 50, including Usman Majid, the minister and target of the suicide attack.
The incident happened in Srinigar, a day after a gun battle between security operatives and the military killed five people. The cars met outside a bank headquarters in the city centre.
Another car has been found near the area, which police officials believe to have been wired to explode near the other blast scene.
More news has arrived from Associated Press on the bombing, via BillingsGazette. The death toll has reached four, and the number of victims is now said to be 100. A woman school teacher travelling in a bus said: "There was a bang and the bus windows shattered. Everything was flying in the air ... pieces of flesh and body parts came and hit the bus." The exlposion occurred in Lal Chowk in Srinigar, and a little-known Pakistan-based group called Al-Arifeen (the Pious) has claimed responsibility.
Usman Majid, the supposed target of the attacks, had formerly been involved in counter-insurgency work, and had been a consultant to the armed forces in cases of anti-militant operations, before he became a minister.
