Holland: Bosnian Muslim General Released

Reuters announces that Sefer Haliovic, the Muslim general from Bosnia-Herzegovina, who was on trial at the United Nations war cries tribunal in the Hague, has been found not guilty, and released.

The judge said earlier today: "The accused is found not guilty and therefore acquitted of murder, violations of the laws or customs of war and it is ordered that he be released immediately."

53-year old Halilovic (pictured) was accused of not preventing a massacre of Bosnian Croats in 1993.

He had been charged on January 31, 2005 on 60 counts of murder, in relation to a massacre which took place in the villages of Grabovica and Uzdol in 1993. Sefer Halilovic had an assassination order made against him - this failed to kill him, but his wife Mediha and her brother Edin Rondic were murdered, states Wikipedia.

His lawyer, Faruk Balikagic, has claimed that Alija Izetbegovic, the former president of Bosnia-Herzegovina, attemted to discredit Sefer Halilovic by framing him for the 1993 massacre, and bribed witnesses to testify against him. This account seems to have been vindicated by the UN court.
