Somalia: Islamic Court Militia In Mogadishu Shootouts - 12 Killed
We have reported earlier on the actions of the "Islamic courts" who close down cinemas, sports bars, and other venues they proclaim to be "sinful". They use armed men to enact their will, who roam through Mogadishu, often extorting money from cars at checkpoints.
Today Arabic News reports that the "Islamic courts" had decreed that certain cinemas and entertainment centres should be closed down. Their armed henchmen had gone to a crowded part of the capital, where they were confronted by armed militias charged to protect the area.
The two militias began shooting, with three persons killed on Sunday. On Monday the fighting resumed, and nine more people were killed.
The chairman of the Mogadishu courts, Sheikh Sharif Ahmad announced that the cinemas operate from morning until midnight and that they prevent children from attending school.
In October, Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed's thugs destroyed a film editing complex, where Indian "Bollywood" movies were translated into Somali language. As well as destroying property, Ahmed's Islamic militiamen stole $1,000 worth of cash and items of personal jewellery during the raid.
