Pakistan: Islamists Bomb Karachi Fried Chicken Franchise

A car bomb was detonated outside a Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet in Karachi earlier today, according to Reuters AlertNet. Three people were killed and fifteen wounded.

Police claim that the bomb is almost certainly the work of Islamists. A three-foot wide hole was made in the road and at least six parked cars were set ablaze by the fireball created when the bomb went off. Some victims suffered from severe burns.

Even though the restaurant was not open, passers by were caught in the blast. The fatalities were guards at the nearby Muslim Commercial Bank. Two were killed on the spot, and another died in hospital.

Six of the fifteen injured were in a critical condition. Military explosives, RDX, were used in the bomb.

American food franchises have suffered attacks in Pakistan. In September, two bombs were detonated at a McDonald's outlet and a KFC franchise in Karachi, in near synchronous explosions. Two people were injured then. In May six employees of a KFC outlet were burned to death when their place of employment was set on fire by a Muslim mob.
