Bangladesh: Islamist Bombs Kill Two Judges
The Jamaatul Muhajideen Bangladesh (JMB) have this morning carried out their threat to kill members of the judiciary. At 9 am, two judges were killed and four others were seriously injured in the southern district of Jhalakathi this morning. Another person injured was the person aged 22-23 who threw the bomb at a microbus carrying the two judges to their office, states the Bangladesh Observer.
Senior Assistant Judge of Nalchhiti Upazila Sohel Ahmed (32) was killed instantly. Senior Assistant Judge of Jhalakathi, Sadar Upazila, Jagannath Pandey (35) died on the journey to hospital. The blast tore off the roof of the microbus.
The attack happened while the bus was parked outside the government staff quarter at Pirba Chandkathi, Jhalakathi town. While the bus driver had left the vehicle to pick up another judge, the bomber threw his explosive device. He had an accomplice waiting a few yards away. The bomber, called Mamum was injured, as were a milkseller, a peon of the court, a student, and two others named as Abdul Mannan and Lokman.
Recently there have been threats made against judges, and some attacks. A judge at Sylhet had a bomb thrown at him in a crowded courtroom a few days ago, but he escaped death, and shortly before that, attempts to bomb judges in Chittagong Laxmipur and Chandpur caused several injuries.
The courthouses at Chittagong Laxmipur and Chandpur had been bombed earlier, on October 3rd, killing two people and injuring 15, including a judge.
Today's incident brought court proceedings across the country to a standstill, with judges demanding extra protection before sitting cases. An identical situation followed the bombings of October 3rd.
The injured bomber confessed in a statement to the attack, and said that his father was employed in Rajshahi university as a guard.
Injured Mamun when was being taken to Barisal tried to explode another bomb he was carrying with him but failed as the RAB members and police foiled the attempt and recovered the bomb tied with his thigh and during that time 25 hand-written JMB leaflets from his possession.Mamun claimed while lying in a hospital bed that the attack had been intended as a suicide attack. He was later sent to Dhaka for interrogation.Handwritten leaflets contained "We do not want Taguta law, let Quaranic law be introduced. Law framed by man cannot continue and only divine law shall prevail".
The leaflet was published by Jamaatul Mujahedeen Bangladesh. Mamun gave his statement under section 164 of Criminal Procedure Code at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in presence of the magistrate, police and the local journalists.
The Bangladesh Independent states that at noon, police went to Motahir, and arrested bomber's brother, and also his father, Qamruzzaman.
The crisis of Islamic terror in Bangladesh, when judges, police stations and even prisons have been threatened, has led to India accelerating the construction of a fence around the entire border with Bangladesh, according to yeserday's Sunday Times. Parts of the fence will be electrified.
Last night, an unknown Islamist group calling itself Islami Ranojoddha made a threat to kill all the judges in Noakhali district, according to the Daily Star. This new group denies its links with JMB, but appears to have the same agenda. The threat was made in a letter sent to the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Shahadat Hossain Majumadar.
