Poll: Almost Half of UK Muslims Want a Christian Society in Britain

A poll from today's BBC states that 75% of respondents thought the UK should keep its Christian values, and more than two thirds stated they were Christian, even though only 17% attended church regularly.

The poll questioned 1,019 people, and 69% of Jews, and nearly half of Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus thought Britain should retain its Christian ethos.

Nineteen per cent of the total also said that they felt less positive about Islam since the 7/7 London bombings. About a third of the Christian and Jewish respondents said they had "positive" views on Islam.

Of those who claimed to be Christian, the majority were women, with 59% being male, and 75% women. 44% of those claiming to have no faith agreed Christian values should be retained.

The poll was conducted for the BBC by ICM between 4 and 6 November.
