India: Four Weeks After Riots, Mau's Mosque Set Ablaze
Just over four weeks ago, the town of Mau, southeast of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh experienced religious riots between Hindus and Muslims. These came about when Muslims objected to a Hindu festival called Dussehra taking place, and in consequence, Muslim Friday prayers were disrupted by Hindus using loudspeakers. Seven people died in the ensuing riots, and many more were injured.
Initially 250 people were arrested, mostly for curfew breaches. Curfews were maintained for a while, and even trains were diverted from the town in the riots' aftermath. Local politicians were also arrested, most prominently Mukhtar Ansari, a gangster-turned-politician.
Now, according to the Times of India, there is further tension between the Hindu and Muslim communities, following the burning of a mosque in Mau on Sunday. One of the doors was gutted completely, and was replaced by security officials, anxious to keep the tensions down to a minimum.
Security personnel have been sent in numbers to prevent any repetition of the riots from a month ago. Curfews have continued since the time of the riots, and some parts had day curfews lifted on Saturday, a day before the mosque arson attack.
There is discussion of the curfews being removed on Monday, but the authorities insist on having a high-level review before putting the measure into effect.
