UK: Man Accused of Mosque Burglary
A report from the Gloucester Citizen today states that a man has appeared in court, charged with burgling the Masjid -E-Noor mosque in Ryecroft Street, Gloucester.
25-year old Oves Bham, who has no fixed abode, appeared in Cheltenham Magistrates Court, accused of stealing 500 pounds from the mosque between September 11th and 14th. He is also accused of stealing fifteen pounds from the house of his aunt in Gloucester on November 9th.
The Crown prosecutor said that the case was made more serious as it involved a religious building, and it was referred to the Crown Court. Bahm, who denied both charges, will be in custody until December 21, when he will be committed to the crown court, by videolink at Stroud.
The Masjid-E-Noor mosque, according to the BBC was founded back in the 1960s. In 1961, the Gloucester Muslim Welfare Association purchased two adjoining residential properties, which were then fused together to form the Mosque, which became permanently operational in 1974. Most of the money to buy the properties and construct the mosque had come from donors in South Africa.
The original founders of the Mosque were Gujurati, but recently new Muslim immigrants from the Middle East, the Balkans and Bangladesh have joined the Gujurati congregation. The other main Mosque in Gloucester is the Jamia Al Kareem Mosque in All Saints Road, according to the Muslim Community of Gloucester, whom we mentioned earlier.
