Singapore: Islamic Militant Detained in Custody

According to Catcha.com on Friday, an Islamic extremist has been detained in SIngapore under the country's Internal Security Act. He is the thirty sixth person to be so detained.

35-year old Mohammad Sharif bin Rahmat has links to Islamist groups including Jemaah Islamiyah and Lakshar-e-Tailba, states the home ministry. He had undergone training with Jemaah Islamiyah and was found to be preparing for armed conflict with the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Thirty six people are detained under the Internal Security ACt (ISA) which means they can be held in custody indefinitely. Under the terms of the ISA their cases are reviewed every two years, and individuals are not released until they are deemed to no longer pose a significant security risk.

The home ministry announced that it had released Ali Ridhaa bin Abdullah, a Muslim convert whose name had formerly been Andrew Gerald. Previously ALi/Gerald had been involved in reconnaissance work for Jemaah Islamiyah. His release came after he had responded positively to religious counselling.

In addition to the 36 held in detention, 17 more individuals are under control orders which bar them from leaving the country. SIngapore government officials that there is an increased likelihood of armed attack upon its territory from Jemaah Islamiyah, in the wake of the Bali attacks of October 1.
