Trinidad: Islamist Leader's Office Bulldozed, Weapons Seized

We mentioned earlier how the leader of the Jamaat-al-Muslimeen, 64-year old Yasin Abu Bakr, has been in cutody and facing trial for sedition, after he threatened war and bloodshed if he did not receive enough money (zakat). The army had broken a wall of the organisation's compound, and had taken control of the place.

The latest news is that a sniper rifle, a hand grenade and 500 rounds of ammunition were found in the compound, according to icwales. As many as 11 members of Jamaat-al-Muslimeen were detained in the storming of the compound, which was conducted by army and police. Most have since been released.

25 police and soldiers arrived for the raid, flattened Bakr's office with a bulldozer and brought in heavy equipment to search for weapons which they believed were buried in the compound.

At the same time, raids were conducted at seven mosques across Trinidad with links to Jamaat-al-Mujahideen. Nothing was found in these searches, police said.

According to the Jamaica Observer, as well as the sniper rifle, four magazines and ammunition, police also took away a ceremonial sword, apparently a gift from the Sudanese President Omar Hassan.

The raids took place at 4.30 am. At 8.55 am two of Bakr's four wives, Fatima and Indrani, came to the compound and began a show of histrionics (pictured). Later they were joined by another wife, Anisa. Bakr's two homes at Diego Martin and Queen's Park East were also searched.
