Denmark: Muslim Cleric Jailed For Interfering in Sex Case

The Copenhagen Post reports that an Iraqi-born imam has been sentenced to sixty days in court for pressuring a witness in a sexual abuse case.

The Eastern High Court in Copenhagen heard evidence that he had tried to get a woman to withdraw her statements that her husband and one of his male friends had been sexually abusing her son.

'If he swears by the Koran that he didn't do it, you must go to the police and tell them that you're not going ahead with the case. Remember that we are Muslims, and if you haven't seen anything, he hasn't done anything," he had told the woman in one of several phone calls.

The woman ignored the pressure and testified in court against her husband and his friend. The husband was given three years in prison, and his friend was sentenced to 18 months. Both men are also facing deportation.

The 44 year old imam has not been named, and the woman and her son are now living at a secret address.
