UK: Blair Defeated On 90-Day Terror Detention Ruling
This afternoon, for the first time, Prime Minister Tony Blair suffered a defeat in the House of Commons. He had demanded that potential terror suspects could be detained without charge for 90 days.
This afternoon, the MPs voted on the rule, but by a majority of 31 votes, those against the 90-day detention rule won. 291 MPs voted for the ruling, and 322 against it.
A second motion was put before the House, in which terror suspects should be detained without charge for no more than 28 days. This vote was passed.
323 MPs voted for the measure, while 290 were against it.
