Indonesia: Did Muslims Kill Two More Christian Girls in Poso?
We brought you earlier the report of three Christian girls who were beheaded in Poso, Central Sulawesi on October 29. The three girls have been named now as Ida Yarni Sambue (15), Theresia Morangke (15), and Alfita Poliwo (19). The Scotsman now reports that five men are being questioned in relation to these attacks.
The five are a retired soldier, two hospital security guards and two other civilians, according to Col Oegrosoeno, police chief in Central Sulawesi province. They have not been officially declared as suspects, but the police chief indicated they had been involved. A fourth girl who was severely injured is recovering, under the vigilance of police, as she is a material witness to the crime.
But now two more Christian girls have been attacked in Poso, according to Asia News. The girls, aged 17 were shot in the head at point blank range, and are in a critical condition in hospital. "Yuli" Siti Nuriani was shot in the neck and Ivone was hit in the left side of her jaw.
The Muslim and Christian violence which has plagued the region is something that neither side of the religious divide wishes to acknowledge, lest it stir up more of the sectarian violence which killed 1000 people in the region in 2001 - 2002. There have been recent attacks in the region. A bomb exploded on a bus in Tentena on October 27, and in May a bomb in Poso market killed 22. Following this shooting incident, Muslims and Christians have said that the killers came from outside the region, and were intent on stirring up sectarian violence.
According to Assyrian Int. News Agency the girls were attacked at 7.45pm local time in the Gatot Subroto area of Poso, near a local church on Tuesday evening. The report, which was filed a couple of hours after the Asia news article states that the two girls have now died.
We detailed the escalation of violence by Muslims against Christians in an earlier report.
