Russia/Austria: Sixty Islamist Groups Fund Russian Terrorism

A report from today's Novosti states that 60 extremist Muslim groups, 100 foreign firms and 10 banking groups are financing terrorism in the nation. The information came from a Federal Security Service (FSB) official, speaking at a meeting in Austria.

Deputy spokesperson for the FSB, Nikolai Zakharov, said that crossborder terror was a "cynical political business". He said: "The FSB has information on approximately 200 foreign nationals involved in terrorist activities in Russia," adding that these particular figures were from 1990s reports. Since then many of these protagonists had been rendered inactive, through imprisonment or death.

Zakharov warned that no nation was now immune from the threat of terrorism on its soil. The address was made at a conference entitled International Terrorism: A View from Russia. Also on the podium was the deputy spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Mikhail Troyansky, who highlighted the importance of international cooperation in the fight against terror, which he likened to a hydra.

The need for internaional cooperation was affirmed by the first deputy of the FSB anti--terror department, Major Gen. Vladimir Kulishov, who also stated that there were three top priorites in the battle against global terrorism:

  • Obtaining Intelligence
  • Disrupting the Financing of Terrorism
  • Curbing Trade in Illicit Explosives and Arms

The meeting was attended by interior and foreign ministry officials from Russia and Austria and the media.
