UK: Not -So-PC Policeman Throws Koran in Trash Can
A British Muslim chauffeur, Mohamed Osman, is complaining that a British policeman took his copy of the Koran and his prayer mat, and threw them into a trash can, saying "F*ck you and your Koran", according to the Guardian.
The incident happened when police were called to Osman's house after he was arguing with his sister about money. He admits saying she "deserved a smack" for her behaviour, but claims he has never been, nor ever will be violent.
Osman has had previous run-ins with the police, concerning stolen goods, but despite being arrested on a number of occasions, charges were later dropped.
He claims officers who were called to the scene told him it would be better for him to leave the house, which he shares with his father and sister, for the night. He had already been packing for a trip to Leeds when the officers arrived at 11pm. He spent ten minutes taking clothes and other items to his car, in three separate trips. On his last journey, an officer taunted him about his previous arrests.
While upstairs, Osman was clutching a prayer mat and a Koran when an officer said "You've had a few arrests. You don't want one more." Osman claims he drew out a piece of paper, upon which to write the constable's name, when he says the officer swore at him and threw his Koran and prayer mat into a bin. He was grabbed, pushed against a wall, and then stamped on. The officer reputedly said "I won't leave marks".
Osman, who is a chauffeur, states "He violated my human rights and my beliefs - it's like he threw everything I believed in in the bin."
Osman's father and mother were not present at the time, so the issue is between Osman and the police to verify.
Azad Ali of the Muslim Safety Forum has said "This is the first time I'm aware of where it is alleged that the Qur'an has been desecrated by police officers. If it is true it will have a huge impact." He says the force should be investigating the case thoroughly.
The Metropolitan police are investigating the complaint, and Scotland Yard have stated: "We are taking it very seriously. The investigation is as much in the interests of the officers as the complainant."
It's only a bloody book. I would have thought being stamped on was a more serious complaint. But this is PC Britain we are talking about, where PC PCs must never say or do anything to offend Muslims.
