Holland: Islamist should Get Six Years, Say Prosecutors

The young Islamist, Samir Azzouz, who was arrested on October 14 with six other suspected members of the Hofstad Group is currently facing a court of appeal, according to South Africa's Sunday Times. We described earlier some of the details from this appeals court hearing.

The reason Azzouz is currently being tried is that prosecutors have appealed against a sentence passed down in April of this year, where he was given three months for illegal possession of firearms. He had been charged with terrorism offences, but because of "insufficient evidence" against him, Azzouz had received the three-month sentence. As he had been in custody for that period of time before April's trial, he was released on April 6. When arrested in July 2004, machine gun cartridges and a bullet proof vest were discovered.

A prosecution spokesperson said that Azzouz, who is of Moroccan descent, is once again being reassessed for earlier charges. He was formerly charged with attempting assaults against the Dutch Parliament, Amsterdam's Schipol Airport and a nuclear power plant. 19-year old Azzouz is also in court for his alleged role in an armed robbery.

The spokesperson said that the prosecution at the court of appeal were seeking a sentence of six years and seven months imprisonment.

Azzouz's arrest on October 14 is in connection with his attempts to purchase firearms and explosives, for which he will be tried later.

Thirteen members of the Hofstad Group (named after a slang name for the Hague) will be going on trial in December.
