Spain: Islamist Suspects To Be Extradited To Algeria

TVNZ announced that the Spanish government has agreed to the extradition of two suspected Islamist terrorists to Algeria, where they will face charges of belonging to a terrorist organisation. Abdelkrim Hammad and Mohamed Benaboura are Algerian nationals.

Benaboura, aged 29, additionally faces charges of terrorist murder, robbery and causing terrorist damage. He was arrested in early 2003 in Catalonia with 16 others, and accused of belonging to the GSPC (Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat). Chemicals thought to be weapons material were found at their home. Benaboura was subsequently released in March, and was among four re-arrested in November 2003 after US FBI officials said that other chemicals from the house could have been employed to manufacture napalm.

40-year old Hammad was arrested in December 2002 in the Spanish wine-growing region of La Rioja, under an international arrest warrant. Hammad is said to have trained in Afghanistan, where he was skilled in explosives use, and fought as a jihadist in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Kosovo.
