Philippines: The Muslim Fugitive, The One-Armed Man, and Gloria's Big Cock-Up
Yesterday we announced that a leading figure in the rebel terror group Abu Sayyaf had been captured. The man arested was Radullan Sahiron, responsible for at least 21 kidnapping and hostage-taking incidents. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (pictured) announced to the world that she was pleased with the actions of her police and special operations forces, who apprehended the man yesterday at about 4.30 pm.
It would seem that today, Gloria is not so pleased, and is probably extremely pissed at her security forces. For now, it is announced by Mainichi-MSN, that they had grabbed the wrong guy. Radullan Sahiron has only one arm. So when the security forces came upon a one-armed man in a village in Zamboanga Sibugay province, the individual was nabbed, and Gloria went on television, announcing to the world that she had her man.
National police chief Director General Arturo Lomibao, wiping the egg from his face, announced that the incident had been a big boo-boo, and the poor villager would be returned to his village. "We got one all right, but only a look-alike," he said. "We assure everyone that his rights have not been violated." He added "The fight against terrorism is a long, tedious and emotional battle. Along the way, there are hits and misses."
So Sahiron and the chief of Abu Sayyaf, Khadaffy Janjalani, are still on the loose. The US has placed a combined reward of $5 million for their capture, and the Philippines has also added its own bounty. One hopes the one-armed villager is at least entertained to a good meal and some personal apologies. No mention has been made of compensating him for his trauma.
