Bangladesh: Islamist Bombs By Courier

A consignment of six powerful bombs has been discovered by Bangladesh's elite force, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Chittagong, in the east of the country. The bombs were .each about five to six pounds in weight. They were acting on a tip-off when they raided a location in Chakaria upazila in the district of Cox's Bazar. They also recovered gunpowder and cable detonators. The terrorists managed to escape, states the Bangladesh Independent.

Along with the bombs was found a letter in a tribal language, which detailed the names of twelve terrorists, whose identities have not been disclosed. The letter had instructions for the production of at least 50 bombs, which were to be sent to Khagrachhari district.

In Rajshani, a tip-off led Dhaka detectives to the Parcel office of a courier company, where they discovered a packet, wrapped in plastic and hidden under a bicycle seat. The packet contained bomb-making ingredients, including 1 kilo of white powder, half a kilo of aluminium oxide and half a kilo of suphur. The package also contained letters from Jamaat Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and statements similar to those found at bombing sites left across the country on August 17. The difference in the letters is that in AUgust they demanded the introduction of sharia law. This time they announced an "Invitation for United Islamic Jihad."

The manager of the parcel section, Nazmul, was arrested, along with two employees, Khaleque and Nur Hossain.

The bomb-making equipment and bombs is ominous, as, according to the New Kerala, the 13th annual meeting of SAARC is due to meet in Bangladesh on Nov 12-13. SAARC, or the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation is a trading group which exists to promote trade between Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The recent bombings in India have not dissuaded the country from attending talks, states the Hindustan Times.
