UK: Islamists Intimidating Muslim Students On Campus
A report from Bradford Telegraph & Argus states that the international extremist group Hizb ut-Tahrir has been active in a West Yorkshire university, intimidating students.
Security guards had to evict extremists from a campus dining room after they had been haranguing Muslims for not fasting during Ramadan. The group is also accused of trying to take over the Students' Union.
The allegations were made by Ann Cryer, Labour MP for Keighley, after she visited the university. She did not wish to name it, for fear of putting off potential students.
Mrs Cryer also told MPs she remained stunned by some of the attitudes of young Muslims in West Yorkshire. The university in question is believed to be the University of Bradford, whose Pro Vice-Chancellor Geoff Layer has refuted the allegations, saying that his college has had such "no incidents of note during this period of Ramadan," though he does not deny that there was a problem three years ago of this very nature. One young man denied bullying Muslim women about the way they dressed, saying he "merely explained what will happen to them in the afterlife if they continue to dress inappropriately", she said.
Hizb ut-Tahrir claims to be non-violent, even though it supports Palestinian suicide attacks against Israel. Imran Waheed, a spokesperson for the group denied it was attempting to radicalise young UK Muslims. The organisation aims to set up a Caliphate, and is international in its scope, with activists from Western Europe to Uzbekistan to southeast Asia.
On 15th September this year, Ruth Kelly the Education Minister addressed university heads at a meeting in Tavistock Square, London, in which she warned of the threat of extremists on campuses, and that the administrators of these establishments should be vigilant.
On 16 October, we reported how Hizb ut-Tahrir had already returned to some University campuses disguised under a front organisation, which called itself "Stop Islamophobia".
