Australia: Terror Threat "Imminent"

According to Canoe News, the Australian Prime Minister, John Howard has announced that specific intelligence has been received that a terrorist attack is being prepared against Australia and its citizens.

Earlier today, he introduced a new amendment to his new Anti-Terror Proposals. Speaking to a news conference in Canberra, Howard stated "The reason for this amendment is that the government has received specific intelligence and police information this week which gives cause for serious concern about a potential terrorist threat." He said he had seen the material and "it is a cause of concern".

The amendment he added to the proposed Law means that when a suspect is charged with plotting a terrorist attack, a specific plot and location do not need to be revealed.

Australia's attorney-general, Philip Ruddock, stated that in August the Australian government had considered banning the international Islamic group, Hizb ut-Tahrir, but had not done so for the organisation could not specifically be labelled a "terrorist" organisation.
