Holland: A Year Since Van Gogh Was Slain By Muslim

One year ago tomorrow, film-maker Theo van Gogh, controversial film-maker was stabbed, then shot, and his head nearly decapitated for making a film, called "Submission" in which images of naked women were combined with texts from the Koran. No more. Van Gogh did not call Prophet Mohammed a pedophile (for consummating his marriage with Aisha when she was 9 and he was in his 50s). Van Gogh did not insult the Prophet by calling him a murderer, nor a rapist, even though Mohammed condoned both actions.

Merely showing images of naked women, with texts from the Koran projected upon their bodies, in a film about the subjugated role of women in Islam, was enough to provoke Mohammed Bouyeri to slaughter van Gogh. On 26 July this year, Bouyeri was jailed for life. Ayan Hirsi Ali, who wrote the script for van Gogh's film, has been in hiding for a year, even though she is a member of the Dutch parliament.

Two "over-views" appeared today. Radio Netherlands carries a report by Hans de Vreij, who says that though members of Bouyeri's group have mostly been apprehended, the threat of a terrorist attack remains. Such an attack may be like the one against van Gogh, or may be more serious.

Associated Press laments how a multicultural community that thrived prior to van Gogh's murder has been replaced by one of suspicion and tension.

Though most Muslims are peaceful, the founder of their religion murdered and pillaged. Therefore, Islam will always be a source of threat to peaceful secularised societies. If the founder of a religion killed in the name of religion, then "true" followers of that faith have an example to follow. Osama bin Laden is a murderer. He is also a true Muslim. The murder of van Gogh served to remind people in Holland, and throughout the West, that Islam, when "insulted", is no religion of peace.

First of all, I have to say that most muslims were againest what happened.
But why did Van Gogh made that film? What message did he want to tell?
Muslims were angry of what happened but sorrowfully they found no law to punish that man. Is it supposed that all muslims are able to control their feelings????
In Europe, a man may kill his gf or his wife because she had sex with another. Men are behind half of the crimes committed againest women in Europe. So why don't European men keep their feelings and do nothing when they are angry???
Van Gogh wanted to attack Islam. And the real problem is the laws are not fair and allows any one to attack muslims as much as he wants. While if the same thing happened to Jews, it'said to be anti-semitic( Although Jews are not Sams)
Mohammed came in the 6th century. He ordered muslims to help the poor. Mohammed stopped racism againest blacks, he helped helped women to have much rights. He oredred men to pay for their wives. He ordered men to be good and kind to their their wives. He said: the best of you are the best to their wives.
Before Mohammed arabs used to grave their infant daughters, just because they were afraid of poverty. Mohammed made them stop doing that crime.
So how can the writer of the article say that Mohammed was a bad man?
Mohammed had 9 wives. According to the bible, Solomon married hundereds of wives. David married tens of wives. So why would christians accept solomon and David as prophets and refuse Mohammed to be so?

Ahmed, you ask why Van Gogh made the film? That seems to be a bit of a strange question. Why shouldn't he make the film. The Netherlands is a democracy and freedom of expression is allowed. He was highlighting some aspects of Islam that are intolerant. Are you saying that now no criticism of Islam is acceptable? The laws in the Netherlands are perfectly acceptable. You cannot expect there to be one law to allow Islamists freedom of speech (which may be hateful to Jews, Christians, homosexuals ad infinitum) yet not allow the same rights for non-Muslims to criticise and bring to public attention inherantly Islamic mysoginist, racist, homophobic and violent views which are contradictory to Dutch and indeed, most Western societies. I would say that your views only exacerbate distrust and fear of an intolerant Islam.

First, I agree with comment "most Muslims were against what happened".

Second, why you did not answer his questions? I will listed them again and please answer them:

1- In Europe, a man may kill his girlfriend or his wife because she had sex with another. Men are behind half of the crimes committed against women in Europe. So why don't European men keep their feelings and do nothing when they are angry???

2- If the same thing happened to Jews, can you say " The Netherlands is a democracy and freedom of expression is allowed. He was highlighting some aspects of Jew that are intolerant" ???

3- Mohammed had 9 wives. According to the bible, Solomon married hundreds of wives. David married tens of wives. So why would Christians accept Solomon and David as prophets and refuse Mohammed to be so???
