Holland: Prosecutors Appeal against Decision To Acquit Islamist
Yesterday, prosecutors in Holland appealed the acquittal in April of Samir Azzoouz, the 19 year old terror-suspect, who was among seven detained in Holland just over a fortnight ago, states findlaw.com.
In April he was set free when a court found there was insufficient evidence to convict Azzouz for preparing to attack Schipol airport or a nuclear reactor in the Netherlands. He was convicted of lesser charges of illegally possessing a pellet gun and ammunition clips, and given a three month sentence. As he had served that time already remanded in custody, he was set free.
In the hearing yesterday, Gert Haverkate, prosecutor, asked the court to overturn the acquittal. He listed items found at Azzouz's house, including a silencer, bomb-making materials, a bullet-proof vest and detailed maps of potential targets.
The court heard from an independent expert on bomb-manufacture that the bomb-making materials comprised chemical fertilizer, a timing device, batteries and light bulbs apparently rigged to test as a detonator.
De Bruijn, of the Dutch Forensics Institute, stated that the bomb Azzouz had been trying to make could never have worked, as the chemical fertilizer was the wrong type and the detonator did not work.
Azzouz attended the hearing but remained silent.
We wrote earlier of the arrests of October 14, and described some of Azzouz's past involvements.
