Philippines: Islamist Terror Suspect Jumps Bail

Tyrone Santos, alias Dawud Santos, is a Muslim convert who was detained in the Philippines in March this year for hoarding an explosives cache and plotting bombings in Manila's tourist region during Easter. The brother of Hilarion del Rosario Santos who was detained last week, Tyrone was given bail, apparently put up by a media celebrity.

Now, according to the Australian he has jumped bail and disappeared.

The authorities had seized about 600kg of explosives from the younger brother in a suburban Manila hideout in late March, but he posted bail at a lower court in the northern city of Tarlac on April 26.

President Gloria Arroyo's security aides have named the journalist who allegedly helped pay the bail bond as Julius Babao, a presenter at leading Manila broadcast outfit ABS-CBN.

Babao and the broadcasting network deny the allegations. Santos was allowed to have bail because of an absence of anti-terror laws in the country, states military intelligence chief Rear Admiral Tirso Danga."You will notice that we have been fighting an enemy that uses the very democracy that they are trying to destroy as their refuge," he said.
