Thailand: Suspected Islamists Attack Buddhist Monastery
A report from the Bangkok Post conveys the news that a Buddhist monastery in the troubled southern province of Pattani has been attacked by insurgents.
The attack happened late of Saturday night, with the assailants firing shots, and setting a monk's living quarters ablaze at the Takienthong temple.
A number of cars were also set alight outside the temple. More than 20 spent bullet cases were retrieved at the scene. Security experts and forensic analysts investigating the scene believe the incident was meant to intimidate.
Three teenagers were arrested after the attack, but they have denied any involvement. Despite the shooting and fire, Buddhists in the area turned up at the Takienthong temple today to hold a religious ceremony.
Attacks upon Buddhists in the region have increased recently. On October 15, a Buddhist temple was attacked, where 76-year old monk Phra Kaew Kusalo and two teenage boys had their throats slit. The killers then set fire to the bodies in Wat Phromprasit temple, Panare district.
Two days before that incident, a 66-year old Buddhist farmer, Song Fangpetch was found headless in the Mayo district of Patanni.
