India: Three Bomb Explosions in New Delhi - 51 Dead
Earlier today, around 5.30 pm local time, three bomb explosions caused death and carnage at three locations in India. Latest reports from Chanel 4 News (UK) state 51 people are known to have died, but the death toll will almost certainly rise. At least 80 people are injured, with at least 10 critically.
BBC states that the first two bombs went off in a crowded markets in Central and south Delhi, and the third bomb exploded in Govindpuri. The blasts have been admitted as "terrorist attacks" but at present no group has claimed or been blamed for responsibility.
The first explosion occurred in Pahargani, in a market full of shoppers who were out in numbers prior to two major religious festivals next week, Hindu DIwali, the Festival of Lights (New Year) and Muslim Eid ul-Fitr (Breaking of Ramadan fasting). The Pahargani market is close to the main railway station and is a popular spot for travelling back-packers.
The second blast occurred minutes later in Sarojini Naga market. Again a large number of casualties were recorded, due to the pre-holiday shoppers. The third blast at Govindpur may have been caused by a bus bomb, and at least three people appear to have died.
Prime Minister Singh, who was in the north east of the country, is returning to Delhi.
This report will be updated as clearer news arrives.
There are varying groups who will resort to political violence. In May a Sikh group thought inactive set off bombs in Delhi, there is a horrific ethnic bloodbath in Assam in the east, between the Dimasa and Karbi peoples, which has claimed more than a thousand lives recently, and there are Kashmiri Muslim separatists. As soon as information is available, it will be given.
