Israel: More Attacks Upon Islamists

Last night, a car ferrying members of the Al-Aqsa Martyr's Brigade was hit by an Israeli pinpointed missile, according to 9.sbs.com. The attack came as tens of thousands of Palestinians attended the funeral of eight peole killed in an earlier raid.

Three days ago, a suicide bomb ripped though the market at Hadera, killing 5 and causing 30 casualties. The bombing had been carried out by a suicide attacker, a youth named Hassan abu-Zayed, according to YnetNews. Islamic Jihad released a videotaped "farewell message" of the bomber's last words. Abu-Zayed's tape, broadcast on Al Jazeera TV, stated tthe bombing was a esponse to the killing of West Bank leader of Islamic Jihad, Loie Sa'adi.

On Thursday Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon announced his plans to launch an offensive against Islamic Jihad. As a result of this five men were detained in Hadera and handed over to IDF for questioning. One of the men was found to be carrying a pistol. The main target of these detainings was Sheikh Abd al-Hilam Az a-Din, the leader of Islamic Jihad in Hadera. He was among the five detained, but it is argued that he is only a "spiritual leader" of the group.

Early on Friday 28, twelve more members of Islamic Jihad were arrested in the West Bank towns of Tulkarem and Jenin, according to Khaleej Times. On Thursday night, Israeli F 16 warplanes had fired missiles at empty unpopulated areas in the northern and eastern Gaza strip, destroying roads linking with Israeli borders.

At about the same time on Thursday, as the planes bombed roads, making it less easy for terrorists to launch rocket attacks from these positions, a targeted airstrike from a helicopter killed seven Palestinians in a car in the Jabalaya refugee camp. In this attack, Shadi Mohanna the Islamic Jihad field commander for northern Gaza, and his assistant Mohammed Ghazaineh were killed, states a report from kcbs.com. Apparently another person was also killed in the attack in Jabalaya, not mentioned in Khaleej Times' account.

After these attacks, Islamic Jihad claimed it would continue its path of retaliation, and Ariel Sharon said the attacks were necessary because Mahmoud Abbas, leader of the Palestinian Authority (PA) had made no effort to reign in the terrorists.

The Israeli attacks last night upon senior Al Aqsa Martyr's Brigade members show that Sharon is now broadening his offensive.
