Australia: Muslim-Sensitive Police Guidelines Weaken Justice

We brought you details of the attempts at Muslim appeasement in the state of Victoria, when Labour state premier Steve Bracks introduced his contentious Race and Religious Tolerance Act in 2001, and the farcical and costly litigations that ensued. The state of Victoria has now made another ridiculous ruling to appease religious sensibilities, which could not only be crass, but more seriously, could threaten lives.

Australia's Herald Sun announces the introduction of a handbook, offering guidelines on how police should handle cases involving people of different faiths. The 82-page handbook was drawn up by the head of the Australasian Police Multicultural Advisory Bureau, Gerald Daniels. 50,000 of thse have been distributed in the state of Victoria. The guides advise removal of shoes off before entering Buddhist, Hindu and Muslim houses and places of worship, and to remove hats before entering churches.

More seriously, in issues of domestic violence, instead of treating violence against Muslim wives as a crime to be dealt with with arrests and prosecutions, the handbook advises consultations with local leaders of mosques, who would then work with the families to work against "fragmenting the family unit".

Joumanah El Matrah of the Islamic Women's Welfare Council has called the guidelines appalling and dangerous.

The implication is one needs to be more tolerant of violence against Muslim women but they should be entitled to the same protection," Ms El Matrah said. "Police should not be advising other officers to follow those sorts of protocols.It can only lead to harm." Ms El Matrah said Muslim leaders should be brought into domestic violence investigations only if requested by the abused woman.

Ms El Matrah is so right. Abuse is abuse, and there should be a zero-tolerance of domestic cases, and one rule for all. Muslims came to the country knowing it had a set of laws and standards, but in this state are being treated as if they are above the laws other Australians have to abide by.

The guideline handbooks, printed in full colour, are estimated to have cost $300,000 to produce, a cost to be borne by the taxpayer. Some police officers have voiced their objections to the contents of the book.

A similar set of guidelines was issued to police in the UK in Bedfordshire, in the immediate aftermath of suicide bombings in London, which involved individuals based in Luton, Bedfordshire. The guidelines then were ridiculed as they seemed to put terrorist investigations as secondary to the feelings of people whose homes were being searched for evidence of bomb-making.

Again, police were told to take of their shoes when entering a Muslim house, and to not interrupt people when in prayer. Police dogs are not meant to be used, lest they "offend", women should not be looked at, particularly if in a state of semi-undress, Korans should not be touched (so hide your guns inside a cut-out Koran, terrorists!), and Muslim prisoners should be alowed to take additional clothing with them when taken to a police station, a right not afforded to other prisoners.

This sort of poltically correct nonsense makes a mockery of the rule of law, which has taken years to evolve in both Britain and Australia. Domestic violence is assault, and should be treated as such. Terrorism is a threat to all, and similarly should be treated as such. For police to bend existing laws to appease members of a religion fails all communites, and insults those who worked hard to establish the fair rule of law.
