Spain: Islamic Feminism Conference Urges "Gender Jihad"
Last week, we heralded the Islamic Feminism conference, which opened its three day seminars yesterday. Reports from the first day indicate that things ran smoothly. The BBC announced that 300 delegates arrived for the first day, and the organiser, Abdennur Prado Pavon (a man) stated that the mission for equality in Islam involved refuting chauvinistic interpretations of Muslim teachings. According to ADNKronos, Prado stated the conference would be discussing "the struggle against the chauvinist, homophobic and sexist interpretation of the sacred texts in the Islamic context". Hmm...
The women speakers, mostly from Egypt, Morocco, Syria, Britain and Italy argued that they wanted to collaborate more with non-Muslim feminists, but insist that the latter abandon some of their traditional stereotypes about Islam.
AllHeadlineNews reports that the organisers are calling for a "gender jihad". I am assuming in this context "jihad" means "struggle" and not "holy war".
