UK: Fake Islamic Holy Water Comes to London
We brought you earlier the story of the so-called "Zam Zam" water, which was being sold in Barnsley, Yorkshire.
A report today from the Woodland & Vale News states that this water is now on sale in London, in the borough of Westminster. Westminster Council issued a warning after receiving complaints that the water was being sold locally.
Real Zam Zam water can only come from a unique spring in Saudi Arabia, and the Saudi Arabian government has decreed that it cannot be sold anywhere. Pilgrims on Haj and Umrah regularly drink the water as it is said to possess spiritual and health-giving properties. It is mentioned in the Hadith, and was drunk by the Prophet Mohammed. Pilgrims are allowed to take some Zam Zam water back to their home countries upon their return, but not enough to be sold.
The fake Zam Zam water, when analyzed by Yorkshire trading standards authorities, was found to contain high levels of nitrates in levels beyond recommended safe levels, and in one case, high levels of arsenic. Arsenic may give some clues to its origins, but also arsenic in small amounts is sweet to the taste, (hence its traditional use as a poison) and may have been added deliberately to give the water "flavor".
The Barnsley "Zam Zam" water came in quarter-liter and half-liter plastic bottles, so anyone in London offered the water should report the matter to the police.
