Philippines: Three Islamist Bombers Get Death Sentences
A report from the Inquirer states that two Filipinos and an Indonesian have been sentenced to death earlier today for their parts in bombing a bus on February 14, 2005, the "Valentine's Day Bombing".
Rohmat Abdurrahim, an Indonesian, and Filipinos Gamal Baharan and Angelo Trinidad by were given the death penalty by a regional court in Makati, at the end of a five month trial. The men were convicted of attacking a bus in Manila's financial district which killed four and injured 60 others. On the same day, explosions took place in Davao and General Santos on Mindanao. As well as being given death sentences, the convicted men were ordered to pay 1 million pesos in damages.
Islamist terror group Abu Sayyaf claimed responsibility for the bombings. Baharan is claimed to be a member of this group, while Trinidad (aka Abu Khalil) is a member of the Rajah Solaiman, converts from Christianity who are linked to Abu Sayyaf. Both admitted during the trial to committing the bombing.
Rohmat Abdurrahim is a confessed member of Jemaat Islamiyah, who was captured in Mindanao a month after the attack. Though he pleaded not guilty to the attack, Rohmat admitted providing traning and logistical support to the other suspects, who numbered three. A fourth man, Gappal Bannah of Abu Sayyaf had charges against him dropped, after he agreed to be give state's evidence.
Two other men have also been charged for the bus-bombing, Abu Sulaiman anad Khadaffy Janjali, but they have not yet been apprehended. They are believed to be leaders of Abu Sayyaf.
No date has been set for the executions, and their lawyers have said they will appeal the ruling.
