Iran: Islamist Toad Softens His Croak

ahmadinejad.jpgA report from Reuters states that, through his Moscow Embassy, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has attempted to lessen the impact of his statements seeking to "wipe Israel off the map". The Iranian embassy in Moscow released a statement that said he did not intend to be so "sharp" in his speech, (even though he made two such speeches).

"Mr Ahmadinejad did not have any intention to speak up in such sharp terms and enter into a conflict. It's absolutely clear that, in his remarks, Mr Ahmadinejad, president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, underlined the key position of Iran, based on the necessity to hold free elections on the occupied territories.
Ahmadinejad's outbursts have riled many leaders, including its erstwhile friends in Moscow, who have supported Iran's right to create atomic energy for peaceful intentions.

Other leaders have joined in the condemnation. The Times states that Tony Blair has even hinted at military action as a response to Ahmadinejad's anti-semitic tirades, calling his speech "disgraceful". "If they carry on like this the question people will be asking us is - when are you going to do something about Iran? Can you imagine a State like that with an attitude like that having nuclear weapons?" he said, after a one-day European summit.

Israel's Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, has demanded that Iran should be expelled from the United Nations. Kofi Annan of the UN has expressed his "dismay". Russia has said the speech was unacceptable. In the US, the Bush administration has demanded that Iran behave as a "responsible member of the international community."

The EU, which has tried to be diplomatic in recent conflicts over the nuclear sites at Natanz and Arak, and the August 18 resumpton of its uranium conversion programme in Isfahan, has come out with forthright words. "Calls for violence and for the destruction of any state are manifestly inconsistent with any claim to be a mature and responsible member of the international community", its leaders announced in a statement.

So President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has learned his first lesson in international statesmanship. After being in office for less than three months, you cannot afford to alienate the international community, allies included. What may go down well on a street corner in Tehran does not cut it in the international arena. Maybe he will soon learn the next important lesson of statesmanship. If you want to make a good impression, it also pays not to dress like the man behind the counter in a sleazy high street kebab-shop.
