Afghanistan: Mosque-Based Campaigns Against Drugs
A report from PakTribune states that Afghanistan has received funding for a project which will see Islamic leaders in the forefront of a campaign against drugs in the country, specifically the opium poppy harvests.
The plan, sponsored by the international group the Colombo Plan, will be using $31,200 to have centers for drug prevention at 25 mosques around the country. The counter-narcotics minister, Habibullah Qaderi said that the 25 imams, who will use their mosques to preach on the dangers of drugs and how they are un-Islamic, had already received their training.
"Mullahs will preach in mosques that poppy cultivation, use, trade and process is forbidden according to Islam and the constitution and is bad for health," he said.87% of the world's heroin derives from poppies cultivated in the country. There is a danger that Afghanistan could become a "narco-state" with international cartels ready to take control. There have been plans to eradicate the growth of the opium poppy, Papaver somniferum (illustrated) but thousands of destitute farmers rely upon production of this crop. The farmers will need to find alternative sources of income. Few crops grow as easily as opium.
We brought you earlier a piece on the problems faced by opium farmers, who in one or two instances have had to sell daughters to opium bandits, to cover payments unfulfilled when crops did not manifest, due to UK interference. Some groups, such as the French Senlis Council, have suggested legalising the crop, but these ideas have been rejected by the US, the United Nations, and now the government of Hamid Karzai.
On March 17 this year, Condoleeza Rice, the US Secretary of State, spoke with Hamid Karzai about terrorism and drugs. It was here that the US State Department warned of an impending transition of Afghan to a "narco-state" if something was not done to counter the opium production in the country. It is certain that at least some of the drug trade is linked to terrorism. On October 4, the UK government and the Pakistani government agreed to jointly fight the war on terror and the war on drugs.
