US: LA Jihad and Islam in Jail
An article today from the (free) subscription site of the Sacramento Bee describes how the recent developments of the LA Jihad have made inmates at California State prison, Sacramento, in Folsom targets of suspicion. The suspicions began in the wake of 9/11, but the recent involvement of one of their number, Kevin James, in the "LA Jihad" has made the mistrust more acute.
While on a stretch of 10 years for robbery, James founded his own radical group, the Jamiyyat Ul-Islam Is-Saheeh, according to authorities. From within the confines of Sacramento, he schemed and plotted to have synagogues, National Guard SItes as targets for armed assaults.
A grand jury indictment describes the group as a clandestine organization in which inmates took an oath of loyalty to James and were groomed to carry out violent attacks against perceived infidels upon their release from prison. Citing the pending case, authorities declined to discuss details about the group's membership or how they believe James spread his extremist ideology.Though Kevin James has been transferred to a prison in southern California, awaiting his trial next month, the legacy of his stay has tainted the lives of the Muslim convicts who remain at Folsom, states journalist Crystal Carreon. No supervision is taken of religious services held by Muslim inmates, who have their own room in which to pray and study their faith.
FBI director earlier this year called the prison system a "fertile ground" for extremism. The FBI sent a memo to correctional facilities across the US, asking them to make "threat assessments" of the prison polulations and to disrupt any signs of radicalization. Three days later, Kevin James and members of his "sect", Levar H. Washington (25), Gregory V. Patterson (21) and Hammad R. Samana (21) were indicted.
An article published in August in Alt.Muslim argued that there needed to be more Islam in prisons, not less. A study by the US Department of Justice from April 2004 revealed that 6% of the 150,000 federal inmates are Muslim. This compares to a figure of more than half of inmates in France. It is unknown how many of the US Muslims became converted inside the prison system, but it appears a large part of the demographic did become Islamic converts inside.
In Britain Richard Reid, the shoe bomber, became a convert to Islam while in jail, and other groups, such as the "Muslim Boys", an exceedingly violent gang, use prison as a recruitment zone. Their brand of Islam is entirely violent and criminal, and would be rejected by most Muslims. An account of their prison activities, and their "conversions through force", first published in the Evening Standard, can be found here.
An associate of Richard Reid, Sajid Badat of Gloucester was arrested on 27 November 2003, accused of plotting to become another "shoe bomber". He pleaded guilty to plotting a bomb attack, and the "innocent-seeming" young man was sent to jail for the first time. Badat, who was detained at HM Prison Whitemore, in Cambridgeshire, was allowed to lead Friday prayers with a group of 7 followers. In August this year, Badat and two of his Islamic buddies were put into solitary after a home-made bomb was detonated in the prison. Jonathan, an MP jailed for perjury, found that during his relatively short stay in prison, he was approached on four occasions by Muslims seeking to convert him.
The issue of Islam in jails is contentious. If it brings spiritual solace and wisdom, it is to be encouraged. If however, it foments radicalism and hatred which ultimately leads to acts of terrorism, then it should be discouraged. The US Justice Department report can be uploaded as a pdf file, which is 61 pages long, here.
