Switzerland: Fribourg Insists On Hijab Ban
In the Swiss city of Fribourg, two women workers have been dismissed for refusal to remove their hijabs or Muslim headscarves . Yesterday, the local council confirmed that it opposed the wearing of religious clothing in schools. The two former school employees are complaining that they were unfairly dismissed, states Swiss Info.
They were temporarily employed in August to tend to children during after-school hours, but were dismissed in September for refusing to remove their hijabs.
Mohamed Ali Batbout, head of the local Muslim association insists he will challenge the decision and has demanded a meeting with the school authorities, which has been arranged. The director of the school, Marie-Therese Maradan, has said she will attend the meeting but will not change her decision.
Fribourg city's prohibition on wearing religious apparel, which began in 1999, is based on a precedent set in the canton of Geneva, where the Federal Court upheld a similar ban. No religious symbols, including crosses, are allowed in schools in Fribourg canton.
The headscarf issue is affecting other areas of Swiss life. The country's biggest retailer, Migros, has asked Muslim women at its check-outs not to wear the hijab. Those who refuse will be moved to another department, where they have no contact with customers.
Credit Suisse and UBS state that hijabs are not part of their dress code, but Rival Coop will allow them.
A Muslim woman who is standing as a candidate in Basel City elections on Sunday hopes to keep on wearing her headscarf if elected. Kadriye Koca says the scarf is a mark of her faith, though ironically she is standing as a candidate for the staunchly Catholic Christian Democrat party. Swiss Info have said that with 130 other candidates on the list, she is hardly guaranteed a place in parliament.
