Pakistan: Contraceptives Are Un-Islamic
A report from India's Kerala News announces that Pakistan's clerics have turned down the government's request to use loudspeakers to deliver sermons advocating birth control.
The proposal had been suggested by Pakistan's Population Welfare Department, and would have given honorary awards to the clerics in exchange for supporting the use of birth control in sermons.
A meeting was held on Tuesday, presided over by Maulana Abdul Majid Nadeem, secretary general of the Aamli Majlis Tahaffuz Khatm-e-Nabuwat, with representatives of other groups also present. The conference decided that the proposal was un-Islamic and said thatm should it be enacted, it would breed sexual corruption, vulgarity and other evils in Pakistani society. They further suggested that the Pakistan government should abolish it Population Welfare Department, because "it had no place in an Islamic society".
