UK: Muslims Warned of Mecca Health Risks

mecca.jpgA report from icBirmingham makes clear the health risks potentially faced by pilgrims going on Haj. The next pilgrimage is due on January, but the Association of British Hujjai UK, which is based in Moseley, has warned that travellers should make health preparations now.

Each year, dozens of pilgrims are hospitalised by infectious diseases, including meningitis, after returning from Haj. A spokesperson from the Association stated:

"We are working hard to raise awareness amongst pilgrims and to address the issue of meningitis seriously to protect loss of innocent human lives.

"A substantial number of pilgrims from Birmingham travel to Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage every year.

"Sound planning, pre-travel health education, full awareness of all the aspects of pilgrimage are the fundamental prerequisites to ensure a safe pilgrimage."

Millions of people travel to mecca annually, but it is a breeding ground for meningococcal disease, hepatitis, influenza and typhoid because of the extreme crowding, either at the ceremonies themselves or in public transport to and from the holy sites. The Association of British Hujai UK is a registered charity, and is the only Haj-oriented organisation in Britain.
