Indonesia: Jemaah Islamiyah Imam Will Have Jail Term Reduced - Again
The spiritual leader of Jemaah Islamiyah, Abu Bakar Bashir (pictured) is expected to have his jail term reduced for a second time, according to ABCnet.au. A spokesman for the Indonesian government has said that banning of reductions in sentences for terror-related crimes will not be ready before Bashir's expected remission, which falls on a religious holiday next week.
The Yemen-born cleric was given a two and a half year sentence in March, for conspiracy, which involved his being told of the 2002 Bali bombings before they took place. He was cleared of more serious charges of planning the attacks.
The Australian government has been lobbying the Indonesian government to revise laws which allow remissions for extremists.
In August, Bashir's sentence was cut by more than four months in an Independence Day gesture, granted routinely for tens of thousands of Indonesian prisoners. The Indonesian government's attorney general's department claims that no law change can be made in the week left before the automatic remission takes place.
ABC said that a spokesman for the Australian foreign affairs minister, Alexander Downey has said the outcome is disappointing, but it had been expected.
