Indonesia: Islamic Sect Kills Three Police Officers

A conflict between police and machete-swinging Islamists on the eastern part of Sulawesi has left three police officers dead, and one Islamist. The Islamists belong to a little-known local cult, regarded by the indonesian Religious Affairs Minister, Maftuh Basyuni, "a very, very deviant group".

According to Reuters the sect apparently wear yellow scarves and white headbands, eschew fasting during Ramadan, and do not pray five times a day. The sect, which fuses traditional customs with Islamic customs, still sees itself as Muslim.

The incident in which police clashed with sect members took place on Tuesday, in the hill regions outside the provincial capital of Palu. The fighting erupted when police attempted to arrest the sect's leader.

The sect used machetes and poisonous blow-darts in their attack, and the police responded with gunfire. 20 members of the sect were arrested and taken into custody for questioning, but the leader of the sect is still free. Today, 300 police are guarding the sect's small village.
