Bangladesh: More Islamist Threats To Blow Up Police Stations
Yesterday, we brought you the story of a bomb threat by Jamaatul Mujahideen Banlasesh (JMB) upon Faisal Alam, Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet, which involved a letter promising to blow up two police stations within "the next fifteen days". Now more threats have been made.
Reuters reports that Nayeem Ahmed, an officer in charge of a police station in northern Rajshahi district, yesterday also received a bomb threat. Signed by a JMB leader, Molana Hafizuddin, the threat was more general, claiming that, unless Islamic law replaced secular law, the group would "blow up all of Bangladesh's police stations".
Ahmed said the threat was being assessed, and that the police were attempting to track down Hafizuddin, who claimed in the letter to be living in another northern district, Chapainawabganj.
The Bangladesh Independent claims the author of the threat is called Maulana Hafizur Rahman, who claims to come from the Shibganj in Chapainawabganj district.
In a separate incident, the Bangladesh Independent states that a judge was threatened in Laxmipur by Manobadhiakar Rakkha O Uddhar Committee, a subsidiary JMB group, sent by its leader from Khulna.
In Khulna, a bomb exploded in Pabla village near Dualatpur police station, but no-one was hurt. The bomb, wrapped in a bag, was dropped from the roof of a two-storey building, and shattered windows.
In Faridpur, the mastermind of the local stage of the nationwide bombings which took place on August 17 was arrested. The man has been named as Mizanur Rahman Muhul.
