Rosa Parks - Rest In Peace

rosa_parks.jpg

rosa_jail.jpgRosa Parks, the lady who wouldn't stand for racial bigotry, has sadly died aged 92. Her simple action on December 1st 1955 on a Montgomery bus in Alabama made her the woman who launched the civil rights movement. Her photograph, taken when she was arrested, shows composure and lack of fear. I will not eulogise about her, other than to say she was an icon, and listed in Time's 100 greatest figures of the 20th century. She received a Congressional Medal of Honor in 1996. She sadly spent the last few years of her life suffering from Alzheimer's. She died with members of her family and close friends by her side.

A biography from Time, written by Rita Dove, can be found here, and a good obituary can be found here. A brave lady, and a great one. She cannot be replaced, but neither can her position in history.
