Malaysia: Government Supports Plan For Non-Muslims To Wear Headscarves.

tudung.jpgIn Southeast Asia, the hijab is called a tudung. The picture shows a rather fetching tudung which is either very spiritual, or radioactive, as it positively glows. News from Malaysia indicates that the government supports a ruling by the International Islamic University (IUI), which states that all students, including those who are not Muslim, should wear the tudung. The Malaysian Star reports that this ruling has been given a parliamentary seal of approval.

"As the rule was approved by the university senate, it is not religious in nature but a matter of uniforms that must be followed. It does not breach basic human rights," stated Dr Maximus Ongkili, who is in charge of national unity.

Opposition MPs were not happy with his response, which had come in answer to a question by Lim Kit Siang, of Ipoh Timur. Lim said that the issue had previously been raised in the Malaysian parliament on April 3, 2003, when the education minister at that time, Mahadzir Mohd Khir had said that students were encouraged, but not compelled to wear the tudung at the IUI.

"So why the change now? Is this not disrespectful of a plural society?" Lim asked, adding that the university should adhere by what Mahadzir had said.

Dr Ongkili said he would follow up on the matter with the ministry, adding that it would not come to a stage where all non-Muslims would be forced to wear the tudung.

The issue of tudung-wearing in education does not just cause problems in Malaysia. In Singapore, the tudung has created problems, as was reported originally in the Thai newspaper the Nation. In Singapore, 15% of the population is Malay, who are almost exclusively Muslim. Though the wearing of the tudung in classes was forbidden, four young Muslim Malays challenged the constitution by refusing to come to school without their tudung and two, who insisted on staying away from school unless given permission to wear their headscarves, were consequently suspended. The dispute arose in February 2002.

The tudung issue was then resolved, according to the BBC when the Mufti of Singapore, Syed Isa Semait, indicated that the girls should go to school, without the scarves. He announced, wisely "The no-tudung rule lasts only for a few hours when the pupils are in school. Education is more important."
