Sudan: Troubles in Darfur Continue

Despite fairly optimistic news from the south of Sudan, with a new federal transitional government being inaugurated, the problems in Darfur seem to be on the rise. Bandits and Janjaweed militia have been terrorising the region, causing refugees and aid-workers to llive in fear. Over the last two and a half years, such conflicts have caused 2 million Darfurese to become refugees. Earlier today, the refugees themselves decided to act like terrorists, taking 34 aid workers hostage, according to Reuters Alertnet.

In Kalma, the largest refugee camp, the aid-workers were taken hostage as a protest, in the hope that police would release one of their leaders, who had been arrested. Later, according to Alertnet, all but 5 of the workers were released. The aid workers came from the Sudanese Red Crescent, the government water and sanitation agency and the American CHF aid agency. Those still held are from the government agency. The government has accused rebels of launching attacks from this refugee camp. The rebel leader, the cause of the refugees keeping their victims hostage, was arrested on Sunday.

Yesterday, according to Sudan Tribune, rebel leaders who were involved with peace talks with the government said it would postpone talks until Friday 28th October, before a fresh round of peace negotiations due to take place in November.

The congress of the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) had been due to start today, but the postponement was made because "some of our guests coming from Europe and the United States could not make it on the 25th", the conference organiser, Ibrahim Ahmed Ibrahim claimed. 800 delegates were expected to join the meeting, which was to be held at a secret location in rebel-held areas.

On Monday, the Sudanese government urged the international community to put pressure on the rebels to come into line with some form of stability, according to Sudan Tribune.

And in Britain - there has been a decision to send Darfurese refugees who had arrived in Britain seeking asylum from the conflict back to the war-torn region, the Scotsman announces. The same Britain that allowed Omar Bakri Mohammed and Abu Qatada to gain legal asylum, but now insist on sending refugees from Zimbabwe back to almost certain assault in Mugabe's land of plunder and repression.

The Court of Appeal announced that "there was no significant risk of persecution in the Khartoum area, and it would not be too harsh to send the three Darfur aslylum seekers there. Three refugees, known only as Hamid, Gaafar and Mohamed were refused permission to appeal to the house of Lords, but their lawyers have said they will petition the Law Lords.

The United Nations has condemned the Sudanese government and its militias for creating the crisis in Darfur, which it has called genocide. Khartoum denies the allegations, but the International Criminal Court is investigating alleged war crimes committed in the revolt.
