Iraq: Voters Ratify Constitution
A report from Reuters says that the Iraqi people have ratified the US-backed constitution, following on from the referendum on Saturday, October 15. The Electoral Commission announced that 79% of voters backed the constitution, and 21% opposed it. The divisions were based upon sectarian and ethnic lines.
In a few Shia and Kurdish areas, the votes were as high as 95% and even 99%, while in Anbar, a Sunni region, 97% rejected the constitution. One Sunni leader made claims that the voting was rigged, but UN and Iraqi officials insisted the election was fair.
The positive support for the constitution will cheer Washington, and will now be followed by a parliamentary election on December 15, to choose the government.
