Bangladesh: Islamists Threaten Bomb Attacks on Police Stations
Today's Bangladesh Independent carries the news that the outlawed Islamist group, Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) has threatened the Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet, stating that two police stations will be blown up within the next fifteen days.
The Deputy Commissioner, Faisal Alam, said he had received the threat to bomb Kanai Ghat and Zakigani police stations in a letter, signed in the name of a top JMB commander. Police sources affirm that extra measures of vigilance are being taken in the district.
In Munshiganj district, members of the Rapid Action Battalion raided a location in Baliakandi area yesterday. They detained a terrorist named Sabuj Hossain Kabir, and took three rifles, four rounds of bullets and two ramdaos (a type of machete), found in his possession.
In the west of the country, in Khulna, a local leader of the ruling coalition partner, the Bangladesh national Party (BNP), Mizanur Rahman Bablu was killed in a bomb attack last night. Rahman, who was a part leader at city-ward level, was killed in Dualatpur area. A case has been filed by his brother, but no-one is named in the case, and so far no-one has been arrested. The Deputy Commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police says that no motive is known for the murder.
